Chapter Thirteen

The sun had just begun to top the mountains when Nikki rose for the day. Sleep had been elusive, so it hadn’t been difficult to rise before Terrence stirred. She’d done as she’d promised Carolyn and submitted her résumé for the position with the Lyon campaign after leaving Terrence’s room the night before. Either Carolyn’s friend owed her a big favor or the campaign was desperate, because less than five hours later, she already had an email asking to set up a time for a phone interview. It might not go anywhere, but the glimmer of hope was enough for now.

With everything that had happened since she’d returned to Carling Lake, she hadn’t found the time for grocery shopping. She headed for the diner. Despite the early hour, there were already patrons seated in the diner.

The frown on Rosie’s face as Nikki approached made it clear that Rosie had neither forgotten nor forgiven the scene that Nikki and Terrence made the last time they were at the diner.

“I’m sorry,” Nikki said, sliding onto a stool at the counter. “My behavior was way out of line.”

Rosie’s frown stayed fixed on her face. “You two put on quite the show.”

Guilt shot through her. “I know and I am truly sorry, and it will never happen again. I promise.”

Rosie sighed. “I remember a time when the two of you were inseparable. Best friends.”

“That was a long time ago.” And somehow the last several hours had made it feel even longer.

“Not that long. Don’t you think it’s time to let this feud between your grandpa and Jarrod go?”

It was sage advice and for a while, she’d thought that’s exactly where she and Terrence were headed. But now? She wasn’t sure if that would ever be in the cards. She wasn’t about to discuss it with Rosie, at least not until she worked out what she wanted to do about Terrence’s revelation.

“Can I get two of the breakfast specials?” It wasn’t a subtle change of subject.

Rosie sighed again. “Coming up.” She called the order through the cutout in the wall separating the dining area from the kitchen before focusing on Nikki again. “You must be awfully hungry this morning.”

“It’s not just for me.” Nikki cleared her throat awkwardly. “I’m sure you heard about the fire at Lakewood House.”

Rosie nodded. “Yes, of course. I’m so glad you’re okay, and I heard there wasn’t too much damage.”

“No, there wasn’t, thankfully. But Terrence was hurt.”

Alarm flashed in Rosie’s eyes.

“Not badly. Minor burns, but he needed a place to stay, and he had been hurt helping me, so he stayed in the guest room at Lakewood House last night.”

Rosie quirked an eyebrow, a small smile starting. “Is that so?”

“Rosie, don’t go thinking—”

The bell over the diner door tinkled, drawing Rosie’s attention before Nikki could set the record straight.

Melinda swept into the diner. “Good morning, Rosie. Could I get a coffee, please? Nikki!” Melinda leaned forward and placed an air kiss on each of Nikki’s cheeks. “I didn’t get to chat with you the last time you were here at the diner.
